Life on the refrigerator door, Alice Kuipers
Short talk
An intimate story of the relationship between a hard-working mother and her teenage daughter during a year of crisis. It is about how we male our lives constantly rushing, never making time for those we love.
Summary
Claire, a 15 year old teenage girl lives with her single mother, a gynecologist who is constantly on duty. Due to the nature of her work, they hardly have time for each other and therefore they 'communicate' by leaving notes on the refrigerator door for each other. The days eventually passes on until on one quite evening, Claire's mother is diagnosed with cancer and the news shatter her live. Soon, they discover that nothing in the world is more important than getting to spend some time with their loved ones.
My talk
Firstly, the book itself is really really short (in the sense of storyline, pages etc etc). There are only 226 pages and the number of words on each page range from 2-100+. Yes from 2 (words!) to 100+ words. This is because the whole book is merely a collection of notes left written by the mother and daughter in the story. Having said that, any fervent reader could finish up the whole book in less than an hour or so.
My verdict
Fair. Can't say I love it. Can't say I don't. The fact that I've read this book almost 13 months ago and only posting about it now is something needed to be considered. However, there is this poem that I really like featured on the prologue of this book.
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
So sweet
and so cold
My rating
5/10
