penang[at]food[dot]com

"For after all, what is man in nature? A nothing in relation to infinity. All in relation to nothing. A central point between all and nothing and indefinitely far from understanding either" , crapped by Jason, 2009

The decision to go to penang was totally random and was made during the raya breaks last weekend. Also known as the 'heaven of food', the little island never disappoints any food-hunter, both professionals or amateurs. People from all around the world goes to penang to discover all, if there's still any, the 'hidden' treasures that they have to offer that yet to be made famous. ;)

So I went around trying out all the good food recommended by the townspeople. The best and only the best available in penang. (and yes, im not talking about the laksa in pasar ayer hitam)!
Shocked huh? heh ;)

claypot chicken rice from Gurney's Drive

add in rice, bits of pieces of chicken, mushrooms, chinese sausages and some salted fish all in a big claypot and whaala this is what you'll get. a very typical one that you can almost get it from just about any streets of penang.

awesomeness saying - the amount of salted fish added was just nice. not too much. not too little. greatly balanced out the taste of the chinese sausages slices. the rice was a little hard though. all in all, a great one to start the day, or end with it. heh ;)

rating - 7/10
'ah yee ping' from Padang

something like abc. the only difference is that the absence of the read beans and 'the green long cendol thing' were substituted by this huge yellow jelly and some chopped fruits.

awesomeness saying - very refreshing! i just like it with the lime juice squeezed on top of it. makes it kinda sour and sweet all together. the perfect desert!

rating - 6.5/10

pinapple fried rice from Gurney's Drive

nothing extraordinary. a very typical dish you can get from almost anywhere. seriously

awesomeness saying - according to the townspeople, they said this is the bomb! dont ask me why. i dont know.

rating - 5/10
curry wan than mee nearbly pasar ayer hitam (this is the yellow mee version)
add in loads loads loads of bits of chicken curry and potatoes on top of the best wan than mee in penang. served blazing hot with some old wodden chopsticks .
awesomeness saying - HOLY SHIT MAN THIS KICK ASS! the yellow mee version is just as nice! the curry blends perfectly, if not heavenly with the wan than mee gravy. plus the 'cha siu' and 'wan than'. one word -AWESOMENESS!
rating - 9.5/10 (no shit!)

curry sotong mee from Kum Kee food court
a very innocent looking bowl of mee with the heart of a devil. the bits of fried cuttlefish inside this makes the cracking sound everytime you chew on it. heh ;)
awesomeness saying - im not particularly fond of squid. so i guess its kinda 'okay okay larr'
rating - 5/10

sui gao from Gurney's Drive

'gao choi', minced dried shrimps and loads of finely chopped radish. wrapped almost in perfection. preferably dipped in sambal paste before consuming.

awesomeness saying - hah! many people had tried and failed to produce good quality 'sui gao' before. so i guess this is the jackpot then. ;)

rating - 9.5/10 (yes, im still not shitting you) ;)

soy bean drink from Kum Kee food court
no introduction needed. everyone on planet earth has experienced it before.
awesomeness saying - man! either the beans were magically produced or i fucked my tastebuds so damn hard until one decent drink of soy bean can produce such a 'i'm in paradise' feeling. okay im exaggerating here ;)

rating - 8/10

ckt from Padang

penang is famous for its ckt. ckt and penang somehow comes together. even when all the powers from the gods of Galdigosh put together still cant manage to separate em' apart. heh ;)
awesomeness saying - FML! just look at the size of the prawn! its wider than my ipod's screen. and the taiwanese sausages are the bomb. the flavour, the texture, the richness, the goodness, the taste, the everything is fuck-my-life-ishh awesomeness!!
rating - 9.9/10 (okay, now im shitting you. its a perfect 10!) ;)

notes : you and me have different sensitivity in our tastebuds so there might be a case of different opinion. dont come around and argue with me that something out there somewhere is way better. im not interested. kthnxbai ;)
