In the events of' "bad morning breaths", one usually wakes up in the morning and finds that one's mouth literally smells like poo. There are many different tales on how and why this is happening but the most intriguing is that believe it or not, the Aussies think that the "poo fairies" had something to do with that. In Australia, people believe that the "poo fairy" comes at night to take a dump in your mouth (!)
I was taken aback when I first read about it. ;)
A formal definition for the uninitiated:
Poo fairy (n):The little fairy that enters your room at night, while you are sleeping and takes a shit in your mouth. This then causes you to wake up with what is commonly referred to as poo breath.
Usage:“Gee, I think the poo fairies visited me last night.” “My breath smells like poo fairies have had a party in my mouth last night"
Parents had been using this method for decades to alarm their children who incidently reluctant to brush their teeth at night before they go to sleep. Fearing that the "poo fairy" will visits them at night and takes a shit in their mouth, the children will obey their parents advice and brush their teeth before bedtime.
Its somewhat effective for children below 10 years old. However, like any old folktales, there is a flaw. Kids above the age of 10 are somewhat smarter and by duct-taping their mouth at night, they think that the "poo fairies" will not be able to enter their mouth.
The idea spreads like wildfire. In the 90s, a majority of kids in Australia (8-12 years old) started to tape their mouth every night before they go to sleep. This "epidemic" began to raise concerns among parents and teachers.
The number of children refused to brush their teeth and started to duct-tape their mouth before they go to sleep grew larger and larger. Eventually at the midst of the 90s, the "poo fairy" idea was abolished in home uses. Parents began to stop using the "poo fairy" ideology and the "epidemic" ended a few months afterwards.
Truth be told, the "poo fairy" ideology was great and indeed a success before the "duct-taping-event" showed up. Until today, the "poo fairy" tale remained a legend in The Land Down Under...waiting to be forgotten...
